Center Parcs Hochsauerland: hills, effort and unexpected favourites
September 30, 2025 Yasmine Kas
Center Parcs Hochsauerland was our first introduction to this part of Germany, and the landscape immediately set it apart from other Center Parcs parks we've visited. Hills everywhere, dense greenery, and a sense that you're staying in the landscape rather than next to it.
It feels less polished and more outdoorsy, and that influences everything, from how you move around the park to how your days naturally unfold.
A park that makes you work for it
This is not a flat park. Accommodation sits high on the hills, while most facilities are down below. That means a lot of going up and down, sometimes more than you expect.
We noticed quickly that walking everywhere wasn't always the most practical option. An e-car turned out to be a genuine lifesaver. What would otherwise have felt tiring suddenly became manageable, and at times even fun. Especially with a broken arm in the mix, being able to drive instead of constantly climbing made a world of difference.
For the kids, the e-car quickly became part of the adventure. Cruising around the park, hopping in and out, grabbing an ice cream or heading to the playground felt exciting rather than necessary.
Without an e-car, this park would feel very different, especially if your cottage is higher up. Here, it genuinely shapes the experience.
Aventura: not just another playground
The real star of this park is Aventura, the large hillside playground. It's long, steep, and nothing like the standard playground setups you find at most holiday parks.
The climbing structure stretches across the slope, and once you start, there's no quick way down. Halfway through, one small but very real problem arose: a sudden need for a toilet break for one of the kids. That meant one adult making the full descent back down again, while the rest stayed put. It was equal parts hilarious and exhausting, and very on brand for this park.
Watching the kids take on the structure, gradually daring more, cheering each other on, and then flying down the large slide at the end was one of those moments where you realise why this park works so well in this landscape. The height difference makes everything feel more adventurous, and the views from the top add an extra layer to it.
For adults, it's also a workout. Getting down and back up again is no small effort, but seeing how much the kids enjoyed it made it more than worth it.
Familiar comforts, with a different feel
At its core, Center Parcs Hochsauerland still offers what you expect. A Market Dome, swimming, indoor play, a game arcade, restaurants and organised activities.
What felt different was how these elements fitted into our days. The kids could each choose a couple of organised activities they really wanted to do, like driving a safari car or trying the bungee trampoline. The rest of the time filled itself with swimming, playgrounds and simply moving around the park.
There were also moments where work had to happen in between. Surprisingly, that didn't disrupt the flow too much. The kids were happy entertaining themselves in the cottage with games, toys or drawing, while the park around us still felt calm and manageable.
Little moments that stick
Some of the nicest moments were unplanned. Sharing the e-car with a stranger heading downhill with heavy bags. Spending longer than intended in the game hall. Ending the day with ice cream and one last loop around the park before heading back to the cottage.
Evenings often ended quietly. Tired legs, a bit of screen time, and early nights. The hills take energy, especially for children, but in a good way.
A park that shifts with the seasons
As temperatures dropped towards the end of our stay, it became clear how much this park changes with the season. Cooler mornings, fog hanging over the hills, and crisp air already hinted at autumn.
With ski slopes located relatively nearby, it's easy to imagine Center Parcs Hochsauerland as a winter base as well. The same hills that demand effort in warmer months could easily become part of its appeal in winter.
Practical takeaways
This is a very hilly park; expect a lot of walking up and down
An e-car is highly recommended if your accommodation is higher up
Aventura playground is a standout and worth planning time for
Works well for active kids who enjoy climbing and outdoor play
Less suitable if you prefer everything close and flat
Feels particularly well suited for cooler seasons and possibly winter stays
Does Center Parcs Hochsauerland work for families?
Yes, if you're comfortable with a bit of effort.
This park suits families who don't mind elevation, enjoy being outdoors, and see movement as part of the experience rather than an inconvenience. It's less suited for anyone who wants everything close, flat and immediately accessible.
For us, Center Parcs Hochsauerland stood out because it felt shaped by its surroundings. The hills, the views, the playground and the way you move through the park all contributed to a stay that felt active, varied and memorable, without needing constant entertainment.
